Faculty of Engineering and Architectural Science

English Language

All applicants must provide a satisfactory English language proficiency test score unless they have completed four years of full-time study at the high school level in a country where English is the first language, or in a school where English is the primary language of instruction.

Requirements reflect overall scores. There are no minimum requirements for band scores (e.g. reading, writing, speaking, listening).

 

All applicants, including those who must submit proof of English language proficiency, are required to present a senior level English course. We will not accept the senior level English course in lieu of a test of English language proficiency, with the exception of the qualifications listed below:

Academic Requirements

High school graduation from an accredited secondary school, including 12 years of study. The high school profile (including accreditation, grading scheme, etc.) must accompany the academic record. While Ryerson University does not have minimum SAT or ACT score requirements, strong performance on a standardized test can strengthen an application.

 

Engineering:

  • Overall average: B average (school grading scale) in at least 5 academic courses in the final year.
  • Prerequisite subject requirements: B grade (school grading scale) in each of Pre-Calculus, Calculus, Physics, Chemistry, and Grade 12 English. AP Calculus and AP Physics. preferred.

Applicants who have been educated in a Canadian province and/or territory outside of Ontario, must submit evidence of education equivalent to the Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with six Grade 12 U or M courses.

Unless noted otherwise, subject prerequisite grades required for admission are determined on the basis of competition. Calculus is required for all Engineering programs. Ryerson University considers all Grade 11 final marks and Grade 12 interim/final marks in our assessment (where applicable).

Alberta

High school diploma with five academic Grade 12 courses numbered 30 or 31, each with a value of five credits. Two academic three-credit courses may be used to replace one five-credit course. A maximum of two three-credit courses may be used in the calculation of an overall average.

 
Engineering:
  • Overall average: 75% or higher in five academic Grade 12 courses numbered 30 or 31.
  • Prerequisite subject requirement: 70% or higher in each of: English Language Arts 30-1, Math 31, Math 30-1, Physics 30, and Chemistry 30.

British Columbia

High school diploma with five academic Grade 12 courses. Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) courses will be considered where presented.

 
Engineering:
  • Overall average: 75% or higher overall in five academic Grade 12 courses.
  • Prerequisite subject requirement: Grade of B or higher in each of: Calculus 12, Pre-Calculus 12, Physics 12, Chemistry 12, and a grade of B or higher in one of the following: English Studies 12, English 12 First Peoples, or Literary Studies 12.

Ontario

Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) with six Grade 12 U or M courses.

Engineering:
  • Overall average: 75% or higher in six Grade 12 U/M courses.
  • Prerequisite subject requirement: 70% or higher in each of the following Grade 12 U subjects: English, Calculus & Vectors (MCV4U), Advanced Functions (MHF4U), Physics (SPH4U), and Chemistry (SCH4U).

Quebec – Grade 12

High School Diploma with six Grade 12 academic (university preparatory) courses. Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) courses will be considered, where presented.

 
Engineering:
  • Overall average: 75% or higher in six Grade 12 academic (university preparatory).
  • Prerequisite subject requirement: 70% or higher in each of the following subjects: English, Senior-level Math with Calculus, Physics, and Chemistry.

Quebec – CEGEP

Twelve academic courses from a Diplôme d’Etudes Collègiales (DEC)/pre-university program of study.

 
Engineering:
  • Overall average: 75% or higher in twelve academic courses.
  • Prerequisite subject requirements: 70% or higher in each of: Two English courses (603 or 604); Calculus I (201-NYA or 201-103); Linear Algebra I (201-NYC or 201-105 or 201-106); Physics (two from NYA, NYB or NYC);
    Chemistry (two from NYA, NYB or NYC).

Baccalauréat/Baccalauréat Général/Option Internationale du Baccalauréat/Diplôme de Bachelier de l’Enseignement du Second Degré. Applicants will be considered for admission on their ‘bulletins’ (with results out of 20) in première and terminale or, if already completed, on their final Baccalauréat results.

 

Engineering:

  • Overall average: 11 or higher in Première and Terminal.
  • Prerequisite subject requirements: 11 or higher in each of: Anglais (première and terminale), Spécialité mathématiques (première and terminale), Spécialité physique/chimie (première or terminale).

Engineering:

  • A Level Mathematics and A Level Physics with final grades of C or higher in each. Please note: AS Levels are not acceptable in place of these subject A Levels.
  • Applicants must also present GCSE/IGCSE/O Levels of at least three different subject areas with minimum final grades of B/6 or higher in one subject and C/4 or higher in two other subjects.
    English and Chemistry with grade of C/4 or higher is required at the GCSE/IGCSE/O Level or A Level.

Zeugnis der allgemeinen Hochschulreife/Abitur (Certificate of General University Maturity).

Transcripts for grades 11, 12, and 13 must be submitted.

Engineering:

  • Overall average: 3.0 Durchnittsnote.
  • Prerequisite subject requirements: 9 or higher in each of Mathematics including Calculus, Physics, Chemistry, and English.

International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma with grades of 4 or higher in three Higher Level and three Standard Level subjects, including prerequisite subjects. Bonus points will be accepted in the calculation of the overall score. Applicants must provide predicted results from their school (bonus points will not be considered during our assessment of predicted results). The IB Certificate and IB Career-related Programme (IBCP) cannot be used in lieu of the high school diploma requirement.

Engineering:

  • Overall average: 28 or higher.
  • Prerequisite subject requirements: 4 or higher in each of Mathematics (Analysis and Approached HL or SL; or Applications and Interpretations HL), Physics (HL or SL), Chemistry (HL or SL), English (HL or SL).

Completion of the General Secondary Education Certificate Transcripts from grades 10, 11, and 12 must be submitted.

 

Engineering:

  • Overall average: 75% in all academic courses in the final (Grade 12) year.
  • Prerequisite subject requirements: 70% in each Pure Mathematics,  Applied Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and English in the final (Grade 12) year.

Engineering:

  • Overall average: B3 or better in 5 academic subjects. 
  • Prerequisite subject requirements: B3 or better in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and English Language.

Engineering:

  • Overall average: B or higher.  
  • Prerequisite subject requirements: B or higher in each of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and English.

The complete academic record of all secondary and post-secondary studies (e.g. college, university) is considered as part of the competitive selection process unless otherwise noted. The possession of the minimum requirements in no way guarantees acceptance. Due to competition, candidates may be required to present averages/grades above the minimum(s).

Transcript/Document Submission Instructions

You are personally responsible for the submission of both secondary and all post-secondary school academic transcripts, regardless of the date of completion and the country of origin. You should make all the necessary arrangements for submission of required transcripts at the time of application to ensure documents are received by applicable deadlines.

Academic studies required for admission must be completed or in progress at the time of application. Transcripts must show the individual marks or grades achieved in each course or subject taken, as well as the diploma/degree awarded (if applicable).

If your documents are in a language other than English, you must provide the documents in the original language, as well as certified/notarized literal English translations.
